PCD Tipped Specialty Tools

National Diamond Tool & Coating manufactures standard and custom Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) tipped cutting tools for machining non-ferrous metals, composites, and abrasive materials.

Our PCD specialty tooling is available in a variety of configurations, including drills, end mills, reamers, boring tools, and custom form tools. Tools can be manufactured to customer drawings, specifications, or existing tool samples.

Standard & Custom PCD Specialty Tools

PCD tipped specialty tools utilize synthetic diamond cutting edges attached to precision-machined tool bodies. The exceptional abrasion resistance of PCD makes it well-suited for applications where conventional carbide tooling experiences excessive wear.

We manufacture PCD tooling for a wide range of machining operations, including drilling, milling, boring, reaming, and profiling.

Custom tooling can incorporate specialized cutting geometries, multiple cutting edges, stepped diameters, and combination features to accommodate specific machining requirements.

Available PCD Tool Configurations

PCD Tipped End Mills

PCD tipped end mills are used for milling aluminum, composites, and other non-ferrous materials. Available in various cutting diameters, and flute configurations.

PCD Tipped Reamers

Used for precision hole finishing where dimensional consistency, surface finish, and extended tool life are important.

PCD Boring Tools

Standard and custom PCD boring tools for internal machining operations. Available with application-specific cutting geometries and configurations.

PCD Form Tools

Custom PCD form tools are manufactured to produce specific profiles, contours, and features in a workpiece. These tools can combine multiple cutting operations into a single tool.

Custom PCD Tooling

Specialty cutting tools manufactured to customer drawings, specifications, or existing tooling samples. Custom designs can accommodate unique machining operations and production requirements.

Advantages of PCD Specialty Tooling

PCD tipped specialty tools offer several advantages when machining suitable materials.

  • Extended Tool Life: Exceptional abrasion resistance helps reduce cutting-edge wear.

  • Reduced Tool Changes: Longer tool life can minimize machine downtime during production.

  • Consistent Machining Performance: PCD cutting edges can maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish over extended production runs.

  • Custom Tool Geometries: Specialized designs can combine machining operations and reduce the number of tools required.

  • Lower Overall Tooling Costs: Extended tool life and reduced downtime can offset the higher initial cost of PCD tooling.

Materials & Applications

PCD tipped specialty tools are commonly used for machining:

  • Aluminum and aluminum alloys

  • Copper, brass, and bronze

  • Graphite

  • Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP)

  • Fiberglass and composite materials

  • Plastics and engineered polymers

  • Green ceramics

  • Green carbide

  • Other non-ferrous and abrasive materials

Tool geometry, PCD grade, and cutting parameters are selected based on the workpiece material and machining requirements.

PCD Insert Repair & Retipping

National Diamond Tool & Coating offers repair and retipping services for worn or damaged PCD turning inserts.

Depending on the condition of the carbide body, existing inserts may be retipped with new PCD cutting edges rather than replaced.
